Intense Pulsed Light Treatment

The Beauty Clinic is a specialist IPL skin treatment centre. Our highly trained and experienced skin Specialists use the Energist VPL system - a treatment that is regulated by the Healthcare Commission to ensure that our customers receive safe best practice and focused care.

What is IPL?

IPL is a revolutionary new technique pioneered by Energist for permanent hair reduction and all aspects of skin rejuvenation. Using short pulses of light energy, which can vary in number, length and frequency, the IPL system emits light across a range of wavelengths, allowing a greater range of more gentle treatments to be performed on virtually all hair and skin types.

The safe and effective technology helps to remove and improve the effects that age, hormonal activity, and over-exposure to the sun can have on the skin. Using short, safe controlled pulses of filtered light to help remove unwanted hair and skin imperfections, and to improve texture and tone, IPL leaves skin clearer and smoother.

What is IPL used for?

  • Removal of unwanted hair and permanent hair reduction

  • Rejuvenates skin leading to clearer, smoother complexions with improved texture and tone

  • Lessens the appearance fine lines and wrinkles, thread veins, spider naevi, cherry spots, pigmentation and age spots, acne, and rosacea

  • IPL has also been successful in reducing the appearance of stretch marks and scarring in certain cases

  • Stimulates collagen growth making the skin feel plumper and better hydrated

  • Reduces the appearance of liver, age and sun spots

  • Helps control symptoms of Rosacea

Where can IPL be used?

Treatment can be given on the face, neck, décolleté, hands and legs.

During your initial consultation, your skin type, specific condition and sensitivity to the treatment will be assessed by your therapist. When treating the face you will also be offered a skin analysis using the Beau Visage camera imaging system. This will show in-depth the pigment and capillary network below the surface of your skin and provides a before and after photographic record for your treatment plan.

What happens during a treatment?

VPL or Intensive Light Treatment (IPL) in action
You will receive a full consultation prior to treatment with a fully trained and experienced therapist who will assess your suitability for the treatment and answer any questions you may have

Your therapist will advise you on the best course of treatment; this will depend on your skin type, the area to be treated and the colour of your hair, and various other factors. You must disclose any medication you are taking as it can effect your response to treatment.

After the consultation your therapist will perform a patch test on your skin in the treatment area. The cost for the consultation and patch test is £20 and takes approximately 45 minutes. The cost of the consultation is redeemable against your first treatment.

The Treatment

The hair in the treatment area will be trimmed and a light conducting cooling gel applied. The IPL applicator will be placed on your skin and flashed in a series of shots to treat the area.

Immediately after the treatment your skin may appear a little more pink than usual but this will fade quickly. The hairs treated will fall out naturally over a period of one to three weeks, leaving your skin feeling smooth.

A course of treatments will be necessary to achieve optimal results due to the natural growth cycles.

Frequently asked questions

Q. What is Variable Pulsed Light and how does it differ from other IPL systems and Lasers?

A. Energist VPL logoIPL was pioneered and developed by Energist as the most advanced form of Pulsed light (IPL) treatment available. VPL systems use micro-pulses of particular colours of visible light to momentarily heat the hair, or a particular skin structure. These variable pulses ensure controlled heating whilst the surrounding skin remains cool to achieve excellent results on a range of hair and skin treatments. Some other forms of IPL contain only one pulse (instead of a series of micro-pulses) with a less consistent heating pattern. Lasers have a single specific wavelength as opposed to a broad spectrum of light. A broad spectrum allows for a more gentle treatment on a wider variety of hair thicknesses, colours, and skin types.

Q. Is it safe and does it hurt?

A. IPL is safe, non-invasive, has minimal side effects, requiring no recovery time. IPL is gentler than laser and very fast. Underarms are treated in less than 10 minutes and half legs approximately 30 minutes. The treatment sensation varies from person to person. Most say that it feels like a flicking of an elastic band on the skin. Any discomfort is momentary and there is no lasting sensation. It causes far less trauma to the skin than waxing.

Q. How does it work?

A. The system is set by the therapist according to the individual hair structure and skin type. The melanin pigment in the hair absorbs the light and converts to heat. This heat energy transfers to the germinating structure of the hair follicle. In those hairs in their active ‘anagen’ growing phase, the follicle cells are destroyed and inhibited from growing another hair. Not all hairs will be in this optimum stage at any given time, and some follicles will be resting without a hair. Since 30-50% of hairs are in the growing phase at any given time, a course of treatment is necessary to achieve optimal reasults.

Q. can I have IPL treatments if I have blond, red or grey hair?

A. In simple terms the greater the contrast between your hair colour and your skin colour the more easily we can achieve great results. If you have very blond or red hair you will need to see your therapist for a consultation and a patch test to determine whether there is enough pigment to generate the required amount of heat for successful treatment. Grey or white hairs are not suitable for IPL treatment as they do not contain sufficient melanin. However, we can offer electrolysis which is the traditional way of inserting a fine sterile needle into the hair follicle to introduce short-wave diathermy (heat) to destroy the germinating cells.

Q. Can I have IPL treatments if I have dark skin?

A. The IPL system has shown to be safe and effective on Fitzpatrick skin types I - IV. You will need to have a consultation with your therapist to assess how effective the treatment will be for you and how long it may take. It will be important to keep your skin protected from the sun and avoid tanning.

Q. How many treatments will I need in a course?

A. A course of treatment is usually 5 - 10 sessions. During your consultation we can give you a good indication of how many you will need for the desired results.

Q. how often will I need a treatment and how do I deal with the hairs between sessions?

A. The frequency of treatments will depend on the rate of hair growth, usually they will be between 4-6 weeks at the beginning of your course and spaced further apart towards the end. The successfully treated hairs will fall out naturally after 1-3 weeks. In the following few weeks, new growth will appear, that will be treated at the next session. You will be advised to cut or shave the hairs between visits.

Q. What homecare advice should I follow?

A. Avoid tanning and sunbeds before and after each session. It is still possible to have treatments during the summer months and your appointments can be scheduled around your holidays. Your therapist will advise you according to your skin type and extent of sun exposure how you should schedule your appointments. We advise using one of our recommended mineral sunblocks, especially for sensitive facial skin. Do not use fake tans before you session, allow one week for the colour to fade. Immediately after your treatment we will apply a soothing cream and sun protection. You will be advised allow the skin time to cool and calm by avoiding vigorous exersize, tight hot clothing, swimming pool chlorine etc for 24 -48 hours. Make up can be applied if required. You must tell us of any changes to medication you are taking, In particular acne treatments such as Roaccutaine, anti-biotics or even certain herbal medicines such as St John’s Wort which would cause a reaction to IPL treatment.
